Goodbye Internet Explorer 6 - The Countdown Is On

In 2001 Internet Explorer 6, aka IE6, was born. While currently only 2.9% of the U.S. still use IE6, the world sits at 12%, and Microsoft is looking to bring that total down. As one of the oldest browsers still in use today its age prevents it from adhering to modern web standards and leaves users wide open to security risks.

As web developers, building websites compatible with IE6 increases the code complexity. This means extra time and extra costs for our customers, which we try to avoid.

So, with Microsoft’s new campaign, they have created a website devoted to bringing the world wide use of IE6 below 1%. The Internet Explorer 6 Countdown is a unique site geared towards getting the current 12% to upgrade.

So what are the benefits of upgrading if you are one of the few users still using IE6?

  1. You will improve your browsing speed letting web pages and content load faster,
  2. You will be able to browse in one window, opening multiple websites in tabs,
  3. Let you experience more on the web - a lot has changed in 10 years.
  4. Give you access to better privacy settings, keeping you safer against threats and attacks.

We’ve joined in on the cause, and we ask that you do too! We are displaying Microsoft’s upgrade banner, which is only visible to users running IE6, on our website which reads, “You are using an outdated browser. For a safer browsing experience, upgrade for free today”. What can you do though? First, if you see that banner at the top of your page, go and upgrade! If not, ask your friends what they’re using, and get them to upgrade as well. Oh and even if you’re using a more up-to-date browser, *Microsoft just released IE9 for those running Vitsa or Windows 7.
